Click Chemistry

Chemistry study the properties and behavior of matter scientifically. It is a natural science that covers the elements that make up matter to the compounds composed of atoms, molecules and ions: their composition, structure, properties, behavior and the changes they undergo during a reaction with other substances.

Click is a localized action resulting in a broader response. For example, when you click, the cursor or arrow icon presses on a point or a button, but the effect will be more than it. Similarly, in Click Chemistry, molecules’ actions are localized, and their effect is felt more broadly and comprehensively. Click chemistry is not a single specific reaction but describes a way of generating products that follow examples in nature, which also generates substances by joining small modular units.

The term “click chemistry” was coined by K. Barry Sharpless in 1998 and was first fully described by Sharpless, Hartmuth C. Kolb, and M.G. Finn of The Scripps Research Institute in 2001.

In 2022, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was jointly awarded to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten P. Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless” for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.”
